CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION & REPORTING COMMENDS EFCC CHAIRMAN, MRS FARIDA WAZIRI, URGES NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO SUSPEND GODWIN NDUDI ELEMELU AND NICHOLAS UGBANE
Centre for Human Rights Education & Reporting commends Mrs Farida Waziri, Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for her efforts in prosecuting corrupt leaders while also respecting their fundamental human rights.
The prosecution of Chief Bode George is a good pointer to the fact that, Mrs Farida Waziri has brought civility and respect for human rights to the commission. We noticed that Chief Bode George, former Board Chairman of Nigeria Port Authority was not hand cuffed and molested during his trial. He remained innocent until he was found guilty and sentenced by a competent court of jurisdiction. This present action is contrary to what was observed during the tenure of Nuhu Ribadu, former Chairman of the commission. During his tenure, fundamental human rights of suspects were grossly violated and were assumed guilty before prosecution.
Our organization watches with keen interest cases involving other suspects who are presently going through trials in various courts in the country including the one involving Senator Nicholas Ugbane and Hon. Godwin Ndudi Elemelu, members of the National Assembly. While calling on members of the National Assembly to suspend these members to enable them defend their cases on their alleged involvement in the Rural Electrification Contract Scam, we also call on Mrs Farida Waziri, chairman of the commission, to expedite actions in facilitating trials of other suspects in the country including former Governors whose corrupt cases have been established almost three (3) years ago.
Peter Ajayi, Executive Director.
